The Bill Neale Automotive Fine Art Award For High School Students honors the world-renowned talent and legacy of automotive icon Bill Neale. The Dallas-based artist passed away in January 2021 at the age of 95.

Bill Neale, a U.S. Navy veteran, was a Navy pilot during World War II. After the war, he received his Bachelor and Master Degrees from North Texas State University School of Art with graduates studies at the Chouinard Institute in Los Angeles.

Neale taught high-school art for five years while building his portfolio.  He then joined Tracy-Locke Advertising in 1953 as a staff artist and illustrator, quickly rising to Art Director, eventually becoming Vice President and Manager of Creative Services until he left to establish his own agency, Point Communications in 1973.

Neale’s automotive artwork and writer portraits graced the covers and pages of many publications including Car and Driver, Automobile, Road & Track and Cavallino, as well as many automotive event posters. He also created the logo for the ficticious Terlingua Racing Team that made its way onto Shelby Mustang race cars including a GT/350 driven by Ken Miles.

Neale was also a founding member of the Automotive Fine Arts Society and is listed in the Texas Advertising Hall of Fame and Texas Auto Racing Hall of Fame.
